Portrait of a Mother and Son

Who is the subject? Yes, I titled this portrait Mother and Son. However, when viewing this image, you might see that this is really a portrait of a single subject – the mother. My intention was to focus this pose on the mother (I wanted her to be the subject) and employ her son as a supporting actor. Thus, a better title might be Mother.

Before starting a portrait session, I find it helpful to know what I want as the end product. Know what you want before you start, and it becomes much more likely that you will arrive at your goals. I had three goals: give mother portraits of her son, capture mother and son bonding, and capture a portrait of the mother.

NOTE: During our consultation, this lovely mother implied, “I don’t take good pictures. My smile always looks false, and I don’t like how I look.” Her goal was to create a portrait of her son. Yet, she did reluctantly agree to participate in some poses.

So, the mother wanted portraits of her son. I wanted to capture mother and son together, and if possible, I wanted to capture a portrait of this mother herself. During this session, most poses were actually focused on the son himself. We captured him playing and looking at his mother – just off camera. However, we also worked on poses of mother and son.

A carry over from my counseling background is to capture my subjects in a moment of bonding and enhanced self-esteem. To achieve this, I find the technique of having a mother and son hug does work to visually create a sense of that feeling of bonding. Their hugging is natural, and it conveys the genuine affection in their relationship. This mother’s enjoyment of her son’s hug is reflected in her face – making for a wonderful memory.

I feel all three goals were achieved. Mother got portraits of her son; we did capture images of mother and son bonding, and I was able capture a portrait of mother. The practical outcome was a happy client who made a purchase.

Tips:

• Know what you want to achieve before you start – then plan to make it happen.
• Capturing people doing what comes naturally is key to creating an heirloom portrait.
• While a client’s goal may be one thing, you can give them more than they asked for.

When is good enough not good

When good enough is not good enough

Some things I have been thinking…

With the growth of digital photography it seems that everyone is becoming a photographer. Even the newest phones capture digital images with enough quality to produce excellent prints. All the tools are now affordable. And, one thing is becoming our new picture normal – good enough is good enough. Yes, today folks are settling for OK images.

With the ease of use and instant satisfaction that today’s digital camera provides, it appears many people today fail to appreciate the knowledge, skills and artistic touch a professional photographer can give them. Instead, many folks today lower their portrait expectations. Is good enough really good enough when your key memories need to be captured. For example, many parents are less than pleased with their high school senior’s pictures AND yet fail to invest in a professional photographer to get quality portraits. Is good enough really good enough?

Capturing an heirloom portrait is more than positioning people and clicking a lot of times. Quality portraiture is painting with light. It takes experience, insight and talent to create a portrait that brings tears of joy. These qualities do not appear by accident. Rather, these qualities are acquired over time by craftsmen who are dedicated to creating only the best.

When good enough is not good enough, please consider a Professional Photographer in East Tennessee. You can find their membership at: http://ppetn.com/ppetn-members. These professionals are dedicated to perfecting their art and giving people their very best. And, if I can be of service, please call (865) 777-5683 to schedule a free consult.

Children grow so much during the first year of their life. It seems they are constantly changing. Portraits are a great way to capture all of these changes. Years from now, we want you and your child to be able to recall these changes with a fondness that can still evoke the emotion of that day.

We offer several programs to suite all of your family portrait needs.

We have the Bonding Before Birth Program that is geared toward new or expecting parents.

In this program you come into the portrait studio and we capture mom and dad during the last trimester of pregnancy, our primary focus of course is mom's tummy, often though we get dad involved in this session by placing his hands on mom's tummy or we capture dad kissing mom's tummy. This is a great way for new parents to really bond over the pregnancy.

We also have a Baby's First Year Program that is a compilation of 5 portrait sessions over the first year of baby's life. The first session usually takes place about 2 weeks after the baby's birth. I n this session we focus primarily on the new baby, we also incorporate mom and dad's hands into many of these images.

The next session is when the baby is 3 months...by this time the baby is usually holding their head up and we focus on expressions.

The third session is when baby is 6 months... in this session baby has usually discovered their feet and can do some images on their tummy.

The forth session is when baby is 9 months... by this time the baby usually can sit up with little or no assistance and may even be learning to crawl and becoming mobile.

The fifth and final session in this program is when your baby reaches 1 year...by this time your child should be able to stand with little or no assistance and has developed a vocabulary. Their personality and expression has become apparent.

If you are expecting a child or would like to have portraits taken of your baby please call our studio at 865-777-5683 to schedule a complimentary Getting-To-Know-You consultation. You may also view our past work on www.broylesportraits.com

20 Portrait Tips for Seniors

We are still scheduling Senior Portrait appointments. If you would like to contact us regarding your Senior Portraits, please call us at 865-777-5683.

I found the following article on http://www.lifescript.com/Life/Family/Kids/Senior_Pictures_Top_20_Portrait_Tips.aspx and thought that it would be helpful to Seniors who have not yet had their Senior Portraits taken.

High school senior pictures are an American tradition that has been around at least since World War II. These timeless photos taken by a professional photographer during the high school senior year capture teenage freshness as it’s poised on the brink of adulthood, ready to begin a career or enter college.

Because senior portraits are so meaningful and last a lifetime, seniors will want to prepare for the big day by getting suggestions for poses and clothing from friends, parents and the photographer.

Below are the top 20 portrait tips to help you plan for a photo session of senior pictures.

1. Plan several outfits to bring.
2. Keep your clothing visually simple.
3. Give consideration to color.
4. Use clothing to accentuate your best features.
5. Go easy on the jewelry.
6. Apply makeup normally.
7. Bring powder.
8. Go with practiced hair styles.
9. Guys need a fresh shave.
10. Don’t worry about blemishes.
11. Don’t worry about braces.
12. Stay away from tans.
13. Help your glasses avoid glare. In most cases your optician can remove
your lenses for your portraits at no cost.
14. Make sure your hands are presentable.
15. Practice your facial expressions.
16. Work on your poses.
17. Personalize your photos with props.
18. Bring someone with you.
19. Become comfortable with the photographer.
20. Only take the photo if you’re feeling your best.

Paula and the infamous shawl!

One of our favorite guests has made another appearance at the studio.

When Paula first came to our studio to have her portrait taken with her Red Hat Society group, we were the ones in for a big treat. These ladies proved to be one of our most memorable photography shoots.

The next photography shoot we did for Paula marked a very special occasion in her life. Her 75th birthday, which we had trouble believing at first because she certainly didn't look 75. On this shoot,Paula brought with her a very special prop to use in her portraits, which was a shawl purchased for her in Germany.

When Paula brought her 2 grand daughters into the studio to have their portrait taken the infamous shawl made another appearance...We thought it would be fun to have the girls tugging and pulling on the shawl like they were arguing over who would get the shawl when their beloved Grandmother was gone. The girls were alot of fun to photograph and we were able to provide them with some great images.

My favorite image that was taken of the girls is where they are tugging on Paula's shawl and we took the picture to black and white then brought color back into the shawl. This is sure to become a treasured family heirloom in the many years to come.

Thank you Paula for allowing us to capture beautiful images of you and your grand daughters. It's always a pleasure visiting with you. We look forward to seeing you and your family again.

Please let your folks know we would enjoy capturing their memories. Call us at (865) 777-5683 to schedule a consultation.

The Ballad of the Malogans Fine 9

The Ballad of the Malogans Fine 9

Once upon a time lived the family Malone—
Nikki, Kiara, DJ, and Tori.
They slayed lots of dragons, all on their own,
but there is much more to their story.

One fair day in the kingdom came gallant DeAndre,
vanquishing the laundry monster—wash and rinse.
With him were Jeremiah, Andre, and Anyai.
Their lives have never been the same since.

The Malones and the Hogans all made a Great 8.
No villain could keep them down long.
No problem or demon could their bravery deflate.
They came through resilient and strong.

But, lo and behold, a BIG change did them await.
Rasheed joined the family, and, oh, he did shine!
Thereafter, in all the kingdom, the Malone-Hogan Great 8
were loudly proclaimed the Malogans Fine 9.

The Malogans faced grand adventures, stupendous and true,
Daring land, sea, and air in their quests, oh, so long.
Their deeds brought them glory and happiness, too,
passed down through the ages in song.

Photo Shoot at LC Ink!

Q: What do you get when you mix a modern bride to be that has several tattoos and three photographers with very different shooting styles, not to mention a really neat Graffiti wall at our local LC Ink tattoo shop in Lenoir City?

A: A fun filled afternoon and a REWARDING experience for all parties involved!

My assistant MeLinda went on a photoshoot this past weekend with Jimmy Chiarella from Studio 102 and a close friend of his Jim Zuckerman.

Jim Zuckerman is a legendary photographer who has written 14 books about photography and been recognized as a leader in photography for the past 30 years. Jim also writes for Popular Photography Magazine and teaches online photography classes.

Jimmy Chiarella is a commercial photographer who photographs for City View Magazine and is the official photographer of the Knoxville Opera.

All three photographers have very unique shooting styles and when they got together they had a lot of fun working and learning from each other.

This bride got exactly what she wanted - unique images that captured the essence of who she really is!

Creating and capturing special memories is what we are all about.

Importance of capturing Family memories...

We're all born and then we grow up, the days of playing and being merry come and go in the blink of an eye as we mature into adults.

Our parents never forget what we look like, but it's quite easy for them to forget how small our hands and feet were as infants. When you invest in a memory this image never goes away.

By taking little snapshots here and there we collectively keep the memory of our growing up alive. Memory images become a part of how we are and what defines our childhood. Without these portraits upon which to reminisce we'll never have the chance to sit back with our loved ones and recall from whence we came.

When our own children are looking through the old family photo albums we want to be able to show them great grandmothers face or the old home place where we grew up.

Portraits link our past to today and serve as constant reminder of our future. We need to capture the memories while we can, because, someday, we'll want those images to help us recall our priceless memories.

We are now scheduling appointments for Mother's Day and Spring!

Please call 865-777-5683 to schedule a Getting-To-Know Portrait Consultation.

Michael Broyles Photography Announces Participation in OPLOV

Michael Broyles Photography is proud to remind folks of their participation in Operation Love, a not for profit organization dedicated to promoting troop morale through free photography sessions. The photography sessions may be either pre-deployment, during deployment or upon returning home. Michael Broyles Photography is offering members of the military and their families several different programs. The most popular is where the family receives an 8x8 album with up-to 20 images.

Research has discovered, “that looking at a photo may have an even stronger effect than having the person physically present.”
New York Times February 2010

Michael Broyles stated that, “It is an honor to be able to participate in Operation Love and their goal of ‘capturing moments that will always be remembered’ fits perfectly into my goal as a portrait photographer. For those who have never been through a military deployment, there are no words to explain how hard it is on the family. Many people are so overwhelmed with emotions and often forget to point and shoot the camera. Operation Love solves this situation and provides the family an heirloom that will be treasured for years.”

Michael Broyles retired as Director of Personnel, US Army Chaplaincy - US Army Reserves and has been a professional photographer for the past eight years. His years of service give him a unique perspective on the family dynamic of overseas deployment and Michael welcomes the opportunity to work with members of the military and their families.

"I feel pretty"

Nearly every parent that has a teen aged daughter living in their home has heard of the popular reality TV show America's Next Top Model. Young girls everywhere want to be models.

In our studio, we've had several moms call us to schedule photo shoots for their young aspiring model daughters. When we sit down with these girls and their mothers to discuss what they want from their portrait experience with us, most of the moms simply want their daughters to feel pretty, AND the girls want fun images like they see on America's Next Top Model.

We are now doing Pampered Portrait Parties/ My First Makeover for girls aged 13 and up!

A Pampered Portrait Party/ My First Makeover portrait session works like this:
A girl invites 3-5 girlfriends into our portrait studio to have glamour portraits taken.

We provide a licensed hair stylist and make-up artist to style hair and make-up for every girl attending, they will also teach the girls about hair care and give the girls make-up and skin care tips.

We provide a full meal or light snacks for all of the girls and will even allow the host girls to bring in a movie to play in our viewing gallery while the photo shoot is taking place.

The portrait session takes 3-5 hours. The girls take away from this not only great memories with their friends, but also more self confidence because of their new makeover, and great new tips and tricks for them to try at home.

Pampered Portrait Parties/My First Makeover Portrait Sessions are great for:
~Sweet 16 party ideas
~Quincineras
~Girls Night Out or anytime!

If you would like more information regarding Pampered Portrait Parties/My First Makeover Portrait Sessions please call us at 865-777-5683.

Pain Relief through Photography

Pain Relief Through Photography
By RONI CARYN RABIN

Under certain circumstances, Dr. Master suggested, looking at a photo may have an even stronger effect than having the person physically present. “Having the actual person there might not be a good thing if the person is in a bad mood or not being supportive at that moment. A picture could be a better solution,” she said.

See full article below:

Can looking at the photograph of a loved one make pain go away?

Numerous studies show that strong social connections have benefits for health. People who have active social lives seem to live longer than those who are isolated, and married cancer patients have a better outlook than divorced cancer patients. Now, a study suggests that merely looking at a photograph of a loved one can relieve the sensation of physical pain.

Psychologists at the University of California, Los Angeles, recruited 25 women who had steady boyfriends. Using a tool that applied heat to the women’s forearms, they turned up the temperature until it was slightly uncomfortable and asked the women to rate the pain they experienced on a scale of one to 20.

The researchers manipulated the heat and recorded the women’s reactions under different conditions: while she was looking at a photo of her boyfriend, or a photo of a complete stranger and a chair. They also had the women rate the pain while they held the hand of a stranger hidden behind a curtain, and as they held their boyfriend’s hand or a squeeze ball.

“We saw lower pain ratings on average when the women were holding their partner’s hand compared with a stranger’s hand or an object,” said Sarah L. Master, the lead author of the paper, who did the study at U.C.L.A. as part of her doctoral research.

When the women looked at photographs of their boyfriends, they rated the pain lower than when they were staring at a photo of a stranger or a chair. Surprisingly, they even ranked the pain lower than they had while holding their boyfriend’s hand.

“It’s interesting that a physical sensation can actually become more manageable by just looking at a photo of someone you find supportive,” Dr. Master said. The study appeared in the November issue of the journal Psychological Science.

Under certain circumstances, Dr. Master suggested, looking at a photo may have an even stronger effect than having the person physically present. “Having the actual person there might not be a good thing if the person is in a bad mood or not being supportive at that moment. A picture could be a better solution,” she said.

Dr. Master said the mere reminder of the loved one may engender feelings of support, possibly by prompting the release of endogenous opioids, chemicals in the brain that have pain relief effects.

Blayke turns 1...

As photographers, it is our job to capture special moments that become treasured memories in the years to come.

Blayke's parents participated in our Bonding Before Birth program and then upgraded their program to a Baby's First Year Program once Blayke was born.

After Blayke's birth her parents brought her in at age 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and now we've just finished her 1 year portrait.

It seems like time really has flown. With each new session that we've taken of Blayke, we've watched her grow and change right before our eyes.

At the first session, she was so tiny, and had such alert blue eyes, at 3 months we started seeing some of her unique personality, at 6 months she began showing us some of her independence, at 9 months she was crawling everywhere and kept us all on our toes, and now at 1 Blayke is walking and running, totally independent and the light of her mom and dad's life.

She's has a contagious smile and is fun to photograph. To her mom and dad, thanks so much or sharing Blayke's first year with us.

We've enjoyed watching her grow and develop over this past year and we are truly honored that you have allowed us to capture these special moments of your family.

We look forward to a long relationship with your family in the years to come.

We are still scheduling appointments for our Vintage Theme Day on February 27th!

A Mother's Love...

A Mother's Love
written by: Helen Steiner Rice

A Mother's love is something
that no on can explain,
It is made of deep devotion
and of sacrifice and pain,
It is endless and unselfish
and enduring come what may
For nothing can destroy it
or take that love away . . .
It is patient and forgiving
when all others are forsaking,
And it never fails or falters
even though the heart is breaking . . .
It believes beyond believing
when the world around condemns,
And it glows with all the beauty
of the rarest, brightest gems . . .
It is far beyond defining,
it defies all explanation,
And it still remains a secret
like the mysteries of creation . . .
A many splendoured miracle
man cannot understand
And another wondrous evidence
of God's tender guiding hand.

We are now scheduling portrait consultations for

Michael’s work earned him Photographer of the Year.

The Professional Photographers of East Tennessee named Michael Photographer of the Year. This award is a result of his portrait work winning the most awards in this past year’s print competitions. Of course, this would never have happened if it were not for his beautiful clients and their willingness to allow their portraits to be entered into competition.

During this next year Michael Broyles Photography will be hosting Exclusive Special Theme days held one Saturday each month.
For $74.99 you choose either one 8x10 or two 5x7 color lab prints.

February’s theme is scheduled to be held on February 27, 2010

- Vintage day- Everyone come dressed in old time clothes such as overalls or lace dresses. We will use props such as a rusted tricycle, old suit cases, pageboy caps or flop hats with flowers like sunflowers, roses and make the pictures sepia toned

Please call us at 865-777-5683 to schedule an appointment

The many faces of Jacob

Over the Christmas season in one week we photographed 4 Jacobs. I guess the name Jacob is a fairly common name but four in one week was very neat.

We hope you enjoyed your holidays and we are now looking forward to creating beautiful memories of you all with your family and friends.

We hope that this new year brings great success and prosperity to you and your families.
